They certainly enjoy a reputation for being durable, low-maintenance and lightweight, but how do modern fiberglass planters actually match up against other popular planter types?
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the shapes, sizes, colors and materials at your disposal, here’s all you need to know about fiberglass planters – their main features and benefits, how fiberglass planters are made and whether, ultimately, they are a good choice for your plants.
I don’t want to spoil the surprise but yes, they are the perfect choice for your plants. If you are all clued up on your planters, it’s time to take a look at our collection of the best fiberglass planters for this year!
Plant containers made of commercial-grade fiberglass are water-, fade- and chemical-resistant. Because fiberglass planters will not rot, warp or degrade over time, they’re suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use, irrespective of weather conditions. As a matter of fact, they show virtually no signs of wear and tear even after prolonged exposure to water, UV radiation, temperature variations, salt air, and chemicals.
As a result, they can be used season after season, year after year, saving you a lot of money in the long run. These planters are also lightweight, which translates into a lower shipping cost per unit. When factoring in all these aspects, one can easily conclude that fiberglass planters deliver the least expensive plant container options available today.
Fiberglass planters are delightfully decorative. Because they are available in a large variety of shapes, sizes and colors, you can easily find different fiberglass planters to match existing décor elements. To add character to a trendy décor, you can also opt for specific planter shades to create beautiful color combinations that feature the latest color trends.
An elegant fiberglass planter can be used as a centerpiece in a lobby or foyer. You could also add several fiberglass planters in this year’s special shade to your garden for a more dynamic, interesting look. For colors that aren’t readily available, please contact our experienced professionals who can create custom fiberglass finishes upon request.
Because fiberglass has fewer molding limitations compared to other materials, planters made of this material can provide some true works of art while also delivering perfect backgrounds for different plant and flower arrangements. What’s more, fiberglass planters are able to lend a classy, contemporary look to indoor and outdoor areas, while providing authentic sophistication and versatility for many years to come.
If you’re looking for ways to spice up your design project, fiberglass planter finishes have the power to amplify the beauty of any plant or flower and transform any space by enhancing it with a colorful yet minimalist understatement. Many stylish fiberglass planters encompass three of the most important characteristics for design flexibility, namely: visual appeal, functionality and versatility.
Especially, when it comes to creating privacy with greenery, commercial fiberglass planters are great choice as modular planters. Lightweight and durable, along with the perfect shapes and lines, fiberglass pots will make the outdoor commercial space neat and clean.
Because modern fiberglass planters come in many different shapes, sizes and finishes that can perfectly complement any contemporary or traditional setting, they are ideal décor elements for many interior and exterior design projects. Whether you prefer clean, sharp lines or elegant curbs, modern fiberglass planters can balance out a wide variety of plants and flowers that are commonly used to enhance the overall design and atmosphere of different spaces.
Round planters and wide fiberglass planters can balance out tall branching cacti, large spiky succulents, small trees, as well as exotic flower arrangements. Conversely, rectangular planters would work beautifully with a nice array of smaller plants, such as the spider plant, oxalis, polka dot plant, lithops and echeveria.
You may be tempted to cut costs by opting for less expensive plastic planters. Plastic planters, however, degrade when exposed to sunlight, and you could actually lose money in the long run. Other planter materials, such as wood, terracotta and metal, are also susceptible to water damage and tend to fade, split and/or crack due to exposure to the elements.
Overall, we believe fiberglass planters stack up favorably against the other six most popular planter materials.
If you would first like to take a step back and understand all the available materials a bit better, then make sure you also take a look at our rundown of all the pros and cons of popular planter materials!
Here at Jay Scotts, fiberglass planters are constructed of the highest quality materials prepared by highly skilled craftsmen.
Step 1: Each of the planters is created with a custom mold in the exact size, shape, and dimensions of the final product.
Step 2: Then fiberglass sheets are carefully cut, shaped and inserted into and surrounding the mold.
Step 3: High-quality polyester resin is then applied several times over the mold (depending on the size and shape of the planter) to create the final product.
Step 4: Once the final coat becomes hard, the planter will then be taken to the finishing department where each product is meticulously finished by hand. Like an expensive fiberglass boat or car, the finishing department trims the product of any excess materials and evenly sands the fiberglass surface so that the finish is smooth.
This process is time-intensive but necessary to produce the exquisite, durable quality plant planters that Jay Scotts customers have come to love and to expect. See in more detail how fiberglass planters are made with a sneak peek in our factory.

Designed for Ultimate Durability
Refusing to bow in scorching heat, corrode under torrential rains or expand and crack when temperatures drop, both aluminum and corten steel are incredibly hard-wearing, happily withstanding the harshest weather conditions without worry.
However, if you're looking for the lightest and most portable option, even in larger sizes, opt for aluminum planters. Not just for flowers and foliage, this material is commonly used in shipbuilding and aircraft fabrication as it's super strong and a third of the weight of steel. Having the freedom to move your pots and planters without specialist equipment enables you to swap and change your layouts whenever trends change, offering you many years of enduring style.
Easy to Keep Them Looking Their Best
With a little bit of extra care and attention, metal's luster can last a long, long time. Simply scrub any marks and stains with a soft, bristled brush dipped in mild dish soap diluted in hot water, then rinse and towel dry. Avoid using steel wool pads and acidic cleaning products as they can leave deep scratches on the surface of your planters, which will let in moisture and cause irreparable damage.
Available in a Variety of Colors
Metal, especially aluminum, is also very malleable, making it easy to customize and mold. Plus, it can be powder coated in a wide rainbow of different colors. This process is environmentally friendly, as it contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and helps ensure durability. Choosing metal planters with a powder coating means you can trust they'll stand up against bleaching UV rays, seesawing temperature changes, and other extreme elements.
Be Wary of Hot Weather
One slight disadvantage to picking metal as your material of choice is that these planters can get searingly hot when left out in the glaring sun, burning your plants, drying out the soil, and increasing the chance of root damage. However, there are several simple ways to get around this issue.
Firstly, try positioning your metal planters in shady locations, such as beneath lush, leafy trees or under a veranda. Next, cover the inside of these containers with a plastic pot liner, clay, or even bubble wrap, as this will provide additional insulation and a barrier between the roots and the hot metal. Lastly, consider using these planters for growing greenery suited to hot conditions and sandy soil, like cacti, succulents, lavender, and sedums.
