What to look for in a high-quality outdoor furniture

So what should you look for in great outdoor pieces?

There's no one-size-fits-all way to define "best." It depends on your own unique sense of style and budget. There are a few things you should always look out for, though:

  • High-quality materials: Always check the materials used by each brand. Ideally, outdoor furniture materials will be sturdy, weather-proof, and made to last many years.
  • Warranties: Trustworthy outdoor furniture companies will always offer good warranties on their products (for example, Outer provides a 10-year warranty on its aluminum frame and legs and five years on its wicker and cushions)
  • Reviews: What have other customers said about this brand? Too many negative reviews could be a red flag.

Outdoor furniture industry expert Bill Ferris advises that you pay close attention to product photographs, especially if you're buying from online retailers.

"Patio furniture brands invest in high-quality photography. Most of the time, online shoppers don't have a chance to check out products in person, so the imagery on a website is critical. The best manufacturers provide shots of their products from various angles, in multiple colors, up close, and in different outdoor settings," he says.

Ferris also recommends diving into the product specs and documentation listed on a brand's website.

e-lansure supply professional and honest service.

"High-end outdoor furniture brands pay attention to the details. Review spec sheets and instructions. Are they clear and comprehensive or confusing and general? The best manufacturers know that proper assembly, cleaning, and care ensure that their products are long-lasting," explains the Decor Interiors founder.

Outdoor and Patio Furniture FAQs

When is the best time to buy outdoor furniture?

"Any holiday is a great time to pay attention to online sales and great promotions," says Betsy Moyer, Co-Founder and Interior Designer at Retreat. "Since outdoor furniture is so seasonal in nature, we like to keep an eye out for Memorial Day sales to kick off the season with new outdoor collections. And of course, Labor Day, the last great sale holiday before much of the nation is headed into winter and retailers are trying to move final inventory."

"The best time to buy your outdoor furniture to ensure you have everything you need for summer fun in the sun is to buy during the fall and winter months," adds Dufresne. "Lead times for delivery are much shorter since demand is lower and more options will be available so you can get exactly what you want."

What is the best fabric for outdoor furniture?

When choosing the fabric for your outdoor furniture, "you want to make sure it is a high-performance material that will withstand the sun, wind, and moisture," says Dufresne. "Two of my favorites are Sunbrella and Perennials. They offer a large variety of styles that will last through many summer seasons with the proper care."

Moyer is another fan of Sunbrella. "The performance fabric market has come a long way in time, and I'm sure there are great competitors out there now, but Sunbrella seems to own the market," she says.

It's not just the fabric you need to think about. You should also put some thought into the materials used to make the furniture. "The most common materials are wood, metal, or synthetic materials like plastic or resin," explains Dufresne. "Each has its own pros and cons, but the ultimate gauge is what will last longest in your particular outdoor environment. By far the easiest to care for and most cost-effective furniture choices these days are made from man-made materials that can withstand the most outdoor wear and tear."

What are the best tips for caring for outdoor furniture?

Once you have your furniture, caring for it correctly will help it last longer and look fresh and clean season after season. Here are some pro tips from experienced designers Betsy Moyer and Megan Dufresne.

"Depending on your climate, the best thing always is going to be cover or stow away in inclement weather," says Moyer. "We live in Sunny Southern California where outdoors are as good as in for much of the year, but I still prefer not to let my seat cushions sit exposed in the heavy sun and occasional rainfall when they aren't getting much play. I recommend a large watertight storage trunk off to the side for smaller cushions and invest in furniture covers specific to your pieces."

Dufresne also advises investing in high-quality furniture covers and having a waterproof storage container to hold outdoor pillows and cushions when not in use to keep them clean, dry and prevent mold and mildew. "If possible, bring your furniture pieces into a shed or garage to keep them out of the elements during the off-season," she adds.
