On the rare occasion that I use my pretty lacquered chopsticks, I wash them by hand. However, I usually use wooden chopsticks, and do so on an almost daily basis.

I'm concerned about how sanitary it is to just wash them by hand with dish soap. However, using the dishwasher is tricky. They're narrow enough to slip through the bottom holes in the cutlery basket. If I lay them on the top rack, sometimes one will fall to the bottom of the dishwasher (not good for either the dishwasher nor the chopstick). But that's what my Japanese mother did, and that's what I do most of the time.

The ideal solution would be a mesh flat basket that fit on a dishwasher rack, but to my surprise such a thing doesn't seem to exist. (if it does, I beg of you, post a link!)

So what do my fellow chopstick-wielding Arsians do?

Follow these four basic steps to clean your chopsticks. Be sure to use warm water, not hot water.
Note: Don’t soak chopsticks that have designs in warm water. Wood expands when submerged and can cause damage to your design.
Lightly oil using cooking oil every 3-6 months depending on how much use they get.
A mixture of lime juice and baking soda can help get rid of stains on your chopsticks.
One part baking soda and one part lime juice with one cup of water. Use a cotton cloth to spread the mixture on the chopsticks. You can add some salt to the mixture to help get stains out as well. Move in the direction of the grain of the bamboo.

Mix equal parts vinegar and water and treat the chopsticks with it.
A tablespoon of lemon juice can help get rid of the vinegar smell a bit sooner as well.
