When should you remove the bottom heat when starting seeds indoors?

Question:

I am doing some seed starting indoors with some seed starting mix, a heat mat, and a humidity dome. If a seed has started germination by breaking out of the seed with its root but hasn’t sprouted up out of the soil, is it ok to remove the bottom heat or will this hinder further germination?

Removing the bottom heat depends on the number of seeds that have started to germinate.  From our Starting Seeds Publication #2751 “As soon as about 50% of the seeds you planted begin to sprout, remove the tray from the source of bottom heat, take off the plastic covering, and move the seedlings to your supplemental light stand. This frees up your heat mat to sprout several more trays of seedlings within a few weeks’ time.”

Starting Seeds: How Long to Use Plastic Domes

I use the plastic shoe boxes found in the storage aisle at Wal*Mart as my seedling incubators. It is always warm enough in the house for seeds to germinate.I keep them covered in the way you are describing until the seeds have sprouted. If it is nice outside, I then take them outdoors with a screen fabric "tent" over them as they grow their first set of true leaves. I only water these seedlings from the bottom by setting them in a pan or tray. Misting them daily in the morning with camomile tea and adding it to the water in the tray is the secret I found to prevent "damping off" which is just a fungal disease. I also find that using new vermiculite or jiffies is important.
